Chu and Farkas: The Two Biggest Pains In Naheed Nenshi's Ass Are Standout On Council's Class of '17
I won't hide my disappointment in the results of the 2017 municipal election. In fact I''ll voice it loudly: Are you facking kidding me?!! Council looks pretty much the same as it did before, and worse still Naheed Nenshi is still the Lord Mayor, the silencer of microphones at Council meetings.
While most of the people I wanted to win did not, two council members I was happy to see get elected took their seats. Sean Chu won re-relection in Ward 4 and newcomer Jeromy Farkas came onto the scene winning in Ward 11. Farkas wasn't the only rookie to join council as he was joined by Jyoti Gondek in Ward 3, George Chahal in Ward 5, Jeff Davison in Ward 6, and "Rundle" Ray Jones in Ward 10.
If you were new to the city or had never paid attention to local politics before, you might get the impression that Sean Chu and Jeromy Farkas were just a couple of major shit disturbers. You'd be right but you wouldn't be aware of the context in which they are disturbing said feces.
You would see exchanges between Councillor Chu and Mayor Nenshi that have made for some great soundbites as the two spar, with Herr Mayor shutting down Councillor Chu in his usual arrogant, "I'm the Mayor and can do what I want" fashion.
This is typical of Nenshi, who bristles at dissent and opinions that are different than his. Your microphone get's cut off. "It's good to be the Mayor" is something I've heard him say in Council Chambers as he silences opposition.
Rookie Jeromy Farkas is often the recipient of scoldings by Nenshi and many of his colleagues on Council. His efforts to have a more open process have been met with scorn and derision and his is also a frequent target of Nenshi's condescension.
On April 6, Councillor Diane Colley-Urquhart said of Jeromy Farkas in a Tweet
I get concerned that my Council colleague is seething just below the surface and agree that anytime he will “unleash his fury” and what that could mean.
Druh Farrell would later Tweet a reply wondering the same thing.
Later that day we were hearing of the tragedy in Saskatchewan and this issue never arose in the media.
I sent a reply to them asking them to clarify what they meant by this. I still have not received a reply.
Councillors Chu and Farkas face an uphill battle in the Council Chamber, but we can let them know we support them. Stand up for the guys that are standing up for us. Tell the Mayor and the rest of Council that you stand with Sean Chu and Jeromy Farkas, even if you don't live in their Wards.

Is This The Start Of A Campaign To Silence Jeromy Farkas?
